Deep pits and Fissures on chewing surfaces cause food residue to lodge and become bacteria which causes tooth decay. These can be avoided by using certain materials which seal these fissures effectively thereby preventing tooth decay.

Sealants are thin coatings of resin and are applied to pits and fissures. They act as physical barrier to prevent bacteria and food from collecting in grooves and fissure. Sealants are mostly applied to permanent first molarless which erupts around age 6 and the second molar at 12 yo. The procedure is  quick and painless.
